COMEDOR
Courtyard Marriott Miramar
801 Ponce de León Ave.
San Juan, PR
2017
Program
-
Renovation of an existing structure in order to accommodate the following program for a Restaurant: a 55-seat Dining Area, a 12-stool Bar, plus all the required Service Areas.
-
Restaurant had to have three main accesses: Ponce de León Avenue Entrance; Courtyard Marriott Lobby Entrance; and Courtyard Marriott Pool Entrance.
-
Design must respond to its context, namely the Miramar Ward, and own a casual tropical look.
-
Restaurant serves all three main meals. Thus, its design had to work for all times of day or transform accordingly.
-
Final Project Area: 1,648 sf
Concept
-
We opted for a concept inspired by the Art Deco style, so prominent in the Miramar Ward, where Comedor Restaurant is located. This style in particular was well suited to the scale of our space.
-
Art Deco references from the Caribbean, particularly from Cuba, with its exuberant colors, helped bring down the innate elegance of the style and achieve a casual retro chic style.
Design Proposal
-
The demolition of existing interior walls and columns allowed for unobstructed views to/from Ponce de León Avenue, Hotel Lobby and Hotel Pool.
-
Corner walls were opened up to give pedestrians a glimpse of the Kitchen and to help connect Restaurant to the nearby commercial hub of Miramar.
-
Bar was located underneath an existing skylight and becomes the main focus from all points.
-
Façade treatment helped separate Restaurant from the adjoining Courtyard Marriott Main Entrance.
-
Art Deco-inspired elements are present in stained glass windows, decorative ceiling panels, illuminated columns, floor and fabric patterns, luminaries and furniture. Most were manufactured locally.
-
Decorative ceiling panels and illuminated columns conceal A/C, acoustic, structural, sound, smoke detection, and sprinkler systems.
