Program

  • The project had to accommodate the following program: a 67-seat Dining Area, a 16- stool Bar, Kitchen, two Bathrooms, Dishwashing Area, and Storage.

  • Bar and Restaurant had to be accessed independently and the Kitchen had to be viewed from Bar, Restaurant and exterior Terrace.

  • Client wanted a space that would transport you away from your immediate context and a style that evoked apothecary and herbalist shops.

  • Final Project Area: 2,924.0 sf (interior)

Concept

  • Concept is inspired in the laboratories, apothecaries and herbalist shops of early XX Century.

  • Our concept is a homage to the Art and Science of Cooking.

Design Proposal

  • The Kitchen is the heart of our Culinary Laboratory, where all the magic is created.  As such, we located it at the center of our space, visually connected to Bar, Dining Area and Terrace.

  • Metal tubes rise and twist about the space, evoking images of old laboratories.  Furthermore, they help to separate Dining Areas from other uses, including Bathrooms, Kitchen and Entrance.  In the Dining Room Entrance, they bend to create a makeshift bench.

  • Surface finishes; including patterned floor tile, black subway tile, decorative metal panels, dark wood paneling, dummy drawers and painted black ceilings, define a mysterious and masculine tone.

  • Acoustic systems are concealed in wainscot.

  • Luminaries; including test-tube and work-light designs and variations, reinforce the laboratory concept.

  • Furnishing selection; including ornamental cast iron table bases, marble tops, and leather chairs, strengthen the period and concept.

  • Details; including hardware, wall graphics, labels on drawers and flasks; all contribute in reinforcing the period and concept.
